How-to Guide: School Participation

Objective

To engage preschool and school-aged children in the "Gold Pumpkins for the Cure" initiative, by helping them participate in a simple, creative activity that raises awareness for pediatric cancer. This guide provides step-by-step instructions for teachers and caregivers to facilitate the activity in a way that is both educational and fun for young children. Your students will be proud to know that for every gold pumpkin they decorate, Little Hero Foundation matches their efforts with $1 to raise money for pediatric cancer research.

Step 1: Introduce the Activity with a Story

Read the Book:

  • Begin by reading the book "Gold Pumpkins for the Cure" to the children. This story introduces the concept of pediatric cancer in an age-appropriate way and explains the significance of painting gold pumpkins to show support.
  • Discuss the story with the children afterward, asking questions like, "Why do we paint the pumpkins gold?" and "How can we help other children?"

Step 2: Prepare for the Gold Pumpkin Painting

Gather Supplies:

  • Small pumpkins: Choose white or orange pumpkins that are easy for little hands to hold and decorate.
  • Gold paint: Use child-safe, non-toxic gold paint (consider using paint sticks or washable paint for easy application). Another great option is pre-painting pumpkins with gold spray paint and have the kids embellish them.  More ideas here.
  • Brushes, sponges, or paint daubers: Provide different tools for applying the paint.
  • Decorations: Offer simple, safe decorations like stickers, glitter glue, or foam shapes to add to the pumpkins.

2. Set Up the Space:

  • Cover tables with newspaper or plastic to protect surfaces.
  • Set up small stations with the paint and decorating materials.
  • Ensure the area is well-ventilated and that children are wearing smocks or old shirts to protect their clothing.

Step 3: Painting the Gold Pumpkins

Explain the Process:

  • Briefly explain to the children that they will be painting their pumpkins gold to help other kids who are sick. Keep the explanation simple and positive.

Supervised Painting:

  • Allow the children to paint their pumpkins using the brushes or sponges provided. Encourage them to be creative and have fun.
  • Assist children who may need help, especially with handling the paint or decorating materials.

Add Decorations:

  • Once the gold paint is dry (or if using quick-dry options), let the children add stickers, glitter glue, or other decorations to personalize their pumpkins.

Step 4: OPTIONAL Share and Display the Gold Pumpkins to Raise Awareness

 Create a Pumpkin Patch Display:

  • Arrange the gold pumpkins in a "pumpkin patch" display within the classroom, school, or at a community event. Include a sign explaining the significance of the gold pumpkins and the "Gold Pumpkins for the Cure" initiative.
  • Encourage parents and visitors to view the display and learn about the cause.

Take Photos:

  • Take photos of the children with their gold pumpkins. With parental consent, these photos can be shared with families or on the school’s social media to raise further awareness.

Step 5: Reinforce the Lesson

Reflect and Discuss:

  • After the painting activity, hold a short circle time to discuss what the children learned. Ask questions like, "How did it feel to make something special to help others?" and "What did you enjoy most about painting your pumpkin?"
